Welcome to the sixth edition of French 5, where I share a glimpse of France through language, places, food and drink, arts and culture, as well as a random fun fact. If you have any feedback or ideas of what you’d like to see or who should be featured, please leave your comment below.
In this week’s edition of French 5, we’re going back to Brittany, along the Emerald Coast, with a special guest. Morgane Lebret, of @morganelebretphotographies, is sharing a bit about herself and some of her favourite things about the region she calls home. FR: Je m'appelle Morgane et je vis en France, dans le nord de la bretagne au bord de la mer. Il y a un an et demi on m’offre mon premier appareil photo et depuis je suis sans cesse à la recherche de paysages à photographier. J’essaie de retranscrire la beauté de ma région au travers d’images que je poste sur Instagram @morganelebretphographies.
Ce que je préfère : quand la mer est déchaînée lors des tempêtes, cela nous rappelle à quelle point la nature est magnifique mais aussi plus forte que nous et que c’est notre devoir de la préserver.
EN: My name is Morgane and I live in France, in northern Brittany along the coast. A year and a half ago I was offered my first camera and since then I’ve been searching non-stop for landscapes to photograph. I try to transcribe the beauty of my region through images I post on Instagram @morganelebretphotographies. What I love most: when the sea is unleashed during a storm. This reminds us that nature is magnificent but also powerful and it’s our duty to preserve it.
01 Language || To live is rare
FR: « Vivre est la chose la plus rare du monde, la plupart des gens ne font qu’exister ». - Oscar Wilde
J’aime cette expression car je pense que c’est important de se demander : qu’est ce qui nous anime dans la vie ? Parfois même des choses très simples. Et d’essayer de créer son propre chemin en accord avec nos aspirations. Nous sommes acteurs de nos vies et non pas spectateurs.

I love this expression because it’s important to ask oneself: what motivates us in life? It is sometimes even the simplest things. And to try to create our own path that aligns with those aspirations. We are the actors of our lives and not just spectators.
02 Place || La Pointe du Grouin
FR: Il y a plein d’endroit magnifique dans la région, mais celui que je préfère est la pointe du grouin dans le nord de Cancale, où je vis. On a une vue sur les îles de la ville mais aussi sur le Mont-Saint-Michel. Le moment que je préfère est soit le matin très tôt avant l’arrivée des touristes soit au moment du coucher de soleil. A ce qu’on raconte on peut régulièrement y voir des dauphins mais je n’ai pas encore eu cette chance !
EN: There are so many magnificent places in the region, but my favourite is la Pointe du Grouin north of Cancale, where I live. You have a view of the city’s islands, but also of the Mont-Saint-Michel. My favourite time to go there is either very early in the morning before the tourists arrive or at sunset. Apparently you can even see dolphins there but I haven’t been that lucky yet!
03 Food & Drink || Seafood and Cidre
FR: Cancale est connue dans le monde entier pour ses fameuses huîtres. Ici il est très facile de bien manger : crêpes, fruits de mer…
Récemment j’ai inventé une recette à base de noix de Saint-Jacques, en feuilleté avec des morceaux de truffe et aux écorces de citron. Un délice ! La boisson locale est sans nul doute le cidre, boisson alcoolisée à base de pomme.
EN: Cancale is known around the world for its famous oysters. It’s very easy to eat well here: crêpes, seafood… Recently, I invented a recipe with scallops in puff pastry with pieces of truffle and lemon peel. Delicious! The local drink is without a doubt cider, an alcoholic drink made from apples.
04 Arts & Culture || Ces messieurs de Saint-Malo
FR: La saga des Carbec avec le premier ouvrage « Ces messieurs de Saint-Malo » de Bernard Simiot. Roman d’aventure mais aussi de société qui retrace l'ascension sociale d'une famille malouine pendant le règne de Louis XIV.
EN: La Saga des Carbec’s first book, Ces messieurs de Saint-Malo by Bernard Simiot. It’s an adventure story, but also about society as it follows the social rise of a Saint-Malo family during the reign of Louis XiV.
05 Fun Fact || High tides
FR: C’est dans la baie du Mont-Saint Michel qu’ont lieu les plus grandes marées d’Europe. La différence entre la basse mer et la pleine mer peut atteindre les 13 mètres. Quand d’autres éléments sont réunis comme le vent, le spectacle peut être extraordinaire à Saint-Malo où les vagues viennent « s’écraser » sur la ville. Il faut rester vigilant car cela peut-être très dangereux.
EN: The bay of Mont-Saint-Michel experiences the the highest tides in Europe. The difference between low tide and high tide can be up to 13 metres. When the other elements unite like the wind, the show can be extraordinary in Saint-Malo where the waves come crashing down on the city. You must be cautious because it can be very dangerous.
Inspiration || Yann Arthus-Bertrand
FR: Le photographe engagé Yann Arthus-Bertrand. J’ai également passé quelques années en Afrique une partie de mon enfance et je comprends qu’il soit tombé amoureux de cette nature sauvage. Au-delà de son talent, j’aime son engagement pour l’environnement. Tous les photographes ont des choses à dire à travers leurs images. Il a décidé de ne pas être un simple témoin mais d’agir concrètement, ce qui en fait un véritable exemple à mes yeux.
EN: A creator that inspires me is the photographer Yann Arthus-Bertrand. Like him, I spend a few years in Africa during my childhood and I can understand why he fell in love with the wild landscape. Beyond his talent, I love his commitment to the environment. All photographers have things to say through their images. He decided to not be a simple bystander but to take action, and to me that makes him someone to look up to.
